CASSET No. 13

Restoration and transformation

This project proposes the redesign of Garraf Beach’s emblematic House No. 13, transforming it into a compact home for a young couple. The project addresses a specific programme in which one of the occupants, a therapist, works from home during the morning, requiring a clear yet fluid separation between the professional consultation space and the private domestic areas.

The proposal begins with an analysis of the historical and architectural context of the 33 traditional huts along Garraf Beach, recognised as an Asset of Cultural Interest. Their distinctive white-and-green façades and coastal character are preserved while introducing a contemporary spatial organisation.

Keywords: Residential architecture, Architectural Restoration & adaptive reuse, Live-work space, Compact housing

Given the house’s limited dimensions and shared side walls, the design avoids conventional partitions and instead explores changes in level and overlapping horizontal planes, inspired by Adolf Loos’s Villa Müller. Vertical circulation becomes a key element, complemented by zenithal natural light and a covered ground-floor terrace that extends the consultation space.

The project seeks to balance heritage preservation, spatial efficiency, and contemporary domestic life.
